How to avoid making Christians appear legalistic & unintelligent to the world.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I’d rather reason with a devout Atheist than try and reason with a self-righteous, religious, legalistic man who thinks too highly of himself.

The legalistic backlash leading up to the movie The Shack has already begun. Never mind that the book is an allegory telling a story of God going out of his way to bring an individual broken by tragedy closer to him, repair him, restore him and then reveal himself for the loving Father he is. Never mind that millions of people read and love the book and testify how it either introduced them to thoughts of God and higher things or brought them closer to God and gave a better understanding of his deep love for us. The film must be boycotted because it depicts God as persons. One highly vocal critic had a particular issue with that person being a black woman. Maybe it would have been ok if George Burns were alive to play the part. I am not sure where he finally ended on that debate.

Anyway, irrespective of how you feel about the book or the movie (I neither recommend or condemn it) PLEASE consider how you make Christians appear to everyone else when you spread the legalistic viewpoints of those who don’t feel Christians have the mental capacity to distinguish their bibles from fiction novels or movies. I am so tired of being embarrassed by these ridiculous arguments. Their result is always the same, people and relationships are damaged as well as reputations. Don’t invite that upon yourself. If your God is afraid of a movie or a book, your idea of him is much too small. My God is above all and can use anything for his purpose. If you are studying your theology, I suggest you put down the fiction novels and get into the bible. If your motive is entertainment, see a movie or read a book and try not to stress out over it. Life is too short for all that.

We all need to follow God to the best of our ability, allowing the Holy Spirit to guide us and not the rigid prodding from men. If he tells you not to see the movie, by all means avoid it. Just consider he may not have us all within the same boundaries so it isn’t our duty to round everyone up and herd them into the same fence.

johnnnicoleIt has only been a few days since we posted to announce our plans for Ministry at Biketoberfest Daytona this coming October. ¬†We’re so glad that so many of our friends are already praying for this mission. I can already feel a great power whenever I pray and plan for the trip. I am 100% convinced that what God showed us last year, as miraculous as it was, was only the beginning. I truly believe that God has a great move of his Spirit planned for this event. I am thrilled to be going and humbled that he would allow us to be a part of his amazing work there.

Some things have changed since I last reached out to you and I need to call on you with more specific needs that we want to make known. I firmly believe that God has already supplied all we will need to see this through. Sometimes all we need to do is make sure those he is speaking to know where the need is.

This year we are hoping to take all of the burden we can off the rest of the crew we rendezvous with in Daytona who have been hit hard lately with being in the hospital and missing a lot of work. I don’t know how much we can raise but I believe I personally have enough friends that understand enough about the eternal impact of what we do that we could easily meet the entire goal without a lot of individual sacrifice. If just my followers gave $25 we’d knock it out tonight! Here’s what we are shooting for; $2,000 by October 1st to completely cover all the legal and setup of the Daytona ministry. This will relieve the burden of things most people don’t even realize we have to deal with. City Permits, inspections, Porta-Johns, food to feed the people, Propane for cooking, etc. This doesn’t do anything to get the crew from NC to Daytona but it does take care of those burdens once they get there. I’d love to see us over shoot this so we can help them cover their travel expenses. The rig they drive gets 6MPG and hauls a lot of stuff. All I’ve told them is I would get all the help I could. They haven’t asked me for anything but prayer. I’m praying every day. Now I’m asking you to join us in praying and if you can, share what you can to be a part of this ministry. We’ve always manage to go when God said to go and I know we will all make it this year as well. I want to close with this; We’re also willing to do some fundraisers if anyone has any ideas. One of our friends at church is making shirts for sale to help us. Our Hot dog suppers before our monthly singings helps out. Last year our church raised 1/2 our expenses by selling hot dogs all summer! That was nice. If you have any questions at all you can message us here or on facebook.

If you want to mail a check simply notate “Daytona” in the memo and you can send it to

UPDATE 06-07-14

Seems like we’ve not been here in a while! We’ve been a little overwhelmed. please forgive us.

Since Drew passing in January, we’ve traveled very little. We’ve done a couple singings with Servant’s Call in Virginia.

Nicole and I have closed the Fireplace Store in Rutherfordton due to health battles.

We’ve moved back home to Brevard, NC to start new work and get the ministry established in the new location. It’s great to be home after over 20 years! Praise Jesus for his leading us home again.

We’re settled into a wonderful new church that is just like old family. Nicole is helping with the music program and I am helping with the sound tech stuff. Hopefully we’ll get the church online soon as well.

We’re discovering great new places to sing and preach/teach. I’ve had many opportunities to speak at our church and we’re making plans to hit the streets of Brevard very soon with some good singing and prayer stop action. Keep your eyes open and if you see us, stop and say hi!

That’s about it for now. I hope we’ll have lots of good reports in the near future.
